Pneumococcal disease is caused by infection with Streptococcus pneumonia bacteria. These bacteria can spread from person to person through close contact. Pneumococcal disease can lead to severe health problems, including pneumonia, blood infections, and meningitis.
There are two pneumococcal vaccines available, PPSV23 and PCV13.
PPSV23 is recommended for all adults age 65 and older. PPSV23 is also recommended for adults from 19 to 64 years of age with certain long-term health problems, a weakened immune system, or who smoke cigarettes or have asthma.
PCV13 is also recommended for adults age 65 and older. PCV13 is usually given first followed by PPSV23 one year later. PCV13 is also recommended for adults from age 19 to 64 years of age in certain situations.
